सलाम करने का सुन्नत तरीका यह है की जबान से
अस्सलामु अलैकुम व रहमतुल्लाही व बरकातुहू कहे. हाथ से या सर से या उंगली के इशारे से सलाम करना या उसका जवाब देना सुन्नत के खिलाफ है. अगर दूरी हो तो जबान और हाथ दोनों से सलाम करे.
नोट: सिर्फ हाथ से इशारा यानी टाटा ईसाइयों को तरीका है.

अब हम सलाम के आदाब देखेंगे
१.मुसलमान मुसलमान से मिले तो उसको सलाम करना चाहिये
२.चलने वाला बैठे हुये को सलाम करे
३.सवार बैठे हुये को सलाम करे
४.कम तादाद बड़ी तादाद को सलाम करे
५.छोटा बड़े को सलाम करे
६.इशारे से सलाम करना जब मुखातब दूर हो
७.ज़ोर से सलाम करना ताकि मुखातब सुन ले (अदबुल मुफर्रद)
किसी मुसलमान भाई से मुलाक़ात हो तो सलाम के बाद मुसाहफा करना मसनून है. औरत औरत से मुसाहफा कर सकती है.  (माखूज अज उसवये रसूले अकरम सल्लल्लाहु अलैहि व सल्लम)
